An Outreach Services Officer is available to assist schools across the Greater Geelong, Bellarine and Surfcoast areas with newly arrived EAL students who cannot access existing New Arrivals Programs.

There is no minimum number of students required in order to receive the support of the Outreach Services Officer.

The role of the Officer is to:

  • assist teachers to assess the English language learning needs of newly arrived students and develop appropriate programs

  • provide information to schools and parents about the GELC New Arrivals Program.

  • ensure schools are aware of the full range of resources available to them to support newly arrived students, including materials and professional development

  • refer teachers and schools for on going support to GELC Cluster teachers if appropriate

Principals in the Greater Geelong, Bellarine and Surfcoast area can obtain assistance from the Geelong English Language Centre (GELC) Outreach Services Officer when newly arrived students present for enrolment. The Outreach Services Officer will arrange a suitable time to visit and assess students then arrange follow up visits to discuss the students’ English language levels and appropriate strategies to assist their development.

Eligibility for Outreach Programs
Students are eligible for Outreach Services if they meet the following requirements:

  • Appropriate visa subclass that attracts SRP funding

  • Within first 6 months of arrival in Australia ( 18 months for Preps)

  • Within 6 months of first enrolment in an Australian school

  • Have identified EAL learning needs

International fee paying students
Schools with international fee paying students can access the Outreach Services program at an hourly rate equivalent to CRT costs.

To assess a student and report back to the classroom teacher is generally charged at the equivalent of one day CRT costs.

  • Contact GELC Coordinator

  • Provide:

    • Visa subclass number

    • Date of birth

    • Date of Arrival in Australia

    • Date of first enrolment in an Australian school
